The Witch and The Squirrel

A year with the Squirrel deserves a mid year check in. The lessons have been bountiful and so have the rewards. From correspondences to the political climate, the lessons don’t have boundaries (even if I do!).

Squirrel Correspondences & Lore

Per Sandra Kynes (2013), squirrel is associated with the zodiac sign of Virgo and the celebratory time of Yule. Some of the underlying manifestations of Squirrel are abundance, action, balance, change, communication, community, concentration and focus on solutions (Kynes, 2013).

In Animal Speak, Ted Andrews describes Squirrel as a keeper of year round power while still holding the balance between work and play (2002). He goes on to provide a rather synchronous wisdom that Squirrel holds: even being a planner and being a participant in reciprocity, it’s important that outward action yields results (Andrews, 2002).

In Norse Lore, the squirrel named Ratatoskr is upon the Cosmic Tree, Yggdrasil. Ratatoskr carries messages between the birds and the snake at the bottom. Much like Mercury, the Squirrel works as a bridge for communication between the two and carries the tension between the two as discussed by H.R. Ellis Davidson (1965).

The Squirrelly Witch

I have watched the patterns play out in my life and my magic. From the conversations to teaching (connections and reciprocity), finding magic in what would otherwise be considered mundane (staying present) to learning to trust my intuition (listen more) on that which will yield fruit versus that which is futile.

Just a few of the things that felt connected, collaborative, and reciprocal in 2024!

I have chosen more time in the garden and less time scavenging and scrolling social media. I have chosen to find the face of the Goddess out on the lake rather than in books (although we all know history and archeological finds are helpful). I have spent more time intentionally communicating and building relationships instead of allowing myself to recluse when it gets uncomfortable.

It’s a spectrum – Squirrel Mathing presence and finding ease upon a spectrum of being abundant differently.

Squirrel Math?

Squirrel flows in life with an in-between energy, and the ease with which it does so is not forced. It doesn’t have an economy of capitalism, it works on an economy of connection. Six months into my journey with squirrel, I’m finding that changing my own economy and ecology is less easy. However, the lesson I’m finding most profound is that the all or nothing mentality I’ve given to the idea of such change in economy/ecology is where the challenge lies.

It is a process, a spectrum, a walking in between.

It’s the ‘and’.

I am a witch who is walking in between economic worlds, ecologies, and learning to connect better with myself. Squirrel math is teaching me how to hold the tension as I find different ways of being at ease within it all.
